Development Log Postmortem
Successes:
One of the most important successes was that our control system has worked well on phones. Also, we have great animations for both enemies and the main character. We have created those animations by adding skeletons on the sprites. In this way, we can make the sprites do anything we want. Moreover, It is the first time we are learning and using tilemap to build the scene which works quite well. We also have multiple weapons and items for players to use which increase the fun and randomness of the game. Basically, I think we have implemented the basic ideas of our designed mechanism into the game and it works well all together. We also include the menu, start scene, end scene, and dead scene with consistency which complete the whole game.
Challenges:
The biggest challenge for our game-making is the transformation from building on windows to build on android. We used lots of time to test it. Also, since it is our first time using a tile map and virtual joystick, we made many mistakes at the very first design which needed to redo some of the work to achieve our purposes. Moreover, we try to add some randomness in the game like the setting of the map and the position and types of the monsters. However, we find out it is quite hard to control the hard level and to fix bugs for it. Therefore, we just fixed all the settings right now.
What You Learned:
By working on this project, we learn how to use virtual joysticks and to build up the game on android. Also, we learn how to build up the scene by tilemap. More importantly, we discover how to add skeletons on the 2D sprites to make our own and well-designed animations. Overall, it increases our knowledge on how to build a 2D roguelike game and the general game design techniques.
Possible Future Revisions:
There are many more revisions we would like to make but do not have time to make it happen.
We want to add more randomness in the game like how the weapon and other items would drop, where and which amount the monsters would show up, and even the different structures of the map. Also, we definitely want to add more monsters, weapons, items, even characters in the game. From roguelike 2D shooting games like Enter the gungeon, they have added many things to collect and unlock. It also has a story behind it to let players find out for themselves.
Therefore, if we can add those things to it, it will become a more complete and high standard roguelike game.
